I said the things we like to talk about our family Oklahoma Grassfed Beef Business our faith marriage and ranching. Yeah, so that was kind of the categories for submitting questions and What’s funny is these questions a lot of them we get asked on a daily basis or at least regularly So I might know the answer so you might know the answer because we do get asked them Pretty often. Okay, so we’ll start off with just some fun ones and then we’ll get into more in -depth questions

For me, it’s the sheep Surprising but true. I don’t know. I really like all of them I think it depends but what comes to mind is the sheep I never had sheep before but they’re hilarious, you know and They get together and they group up with their little hers and there’s you know One gets scared and goes somewhere they all go for sure they They’re pretty calm and stuff like that too. And You know, they sit there and look at you and they in they chew and their mouths go sideways Can’t even do it go to do it to go to do it too. I

Yeah, for me maybe right now, it’s the sheep, but I think it also kinda depends because sometimes I’ll go out and spend some time with the cows and it’s like, man, I think the cows are my favorite. And then sometimes the goats, they just, oh man, the goats are so funny because they’re just not smart at all.

And neither are the sheep. They’re both, it’s like the lights are on, but nobody’s home. And you just crack up at them because they’re just, they’re funny.

My favorite without a doubt are the goats. I have always loved goats. That’s really the reason we got goats in the first place is because I just find them so comical. They jump on everything. They’re just funny. They do funny things. I often get asked if we have fainting goats and we do not have fainting goats right now, but we have had fainting goats in the past. And fainting goats are hilarious.

It’s pretty hilarious. But we would find new ways to, like we would throw a big one of those bouncy balls over the fence at them and they would fall over. But if you do that the next day, like they’re used to it. So you got to find new ways. But we do not have fainting goats right now, we have in the past.

But we love our cows also. I think the cows are just beautiful to photograph because we have lots of colors of cows and they are our primary source of ranch income.

You know, we’re pretty new to to the livestock guardian dogs because yes you know we just started getting into the sheep and the goats like maybe it’s been about two years and so we’ve we hadn’t had livestock guard dogs but now we do and those dogs are awesome.

They just they live on the ranch out in the pasture. They don’t have dog houses. They just they are amongst the animals and sheep and they love their jobs.

My first that came to mind is you need to have a good amount of money.

Yeah, and you need to also be making good money because you’re going to have repairs and stuff like that. I think we own what like 15 or 16 of them now and maybe 17. And I’ve got a good friend of mine that owns like 25 of them and we talk all the time. And it’s so funny because you look at these people on Instagram and Facebook and they’re like,

you know all you need is five rental properties and you’re financially free for the rest of your life and you can buy these with zero money down or other people’s money and well some of that might be a strategy that the likelihood of that happening is slim to none it’s not realistic we are not financially free and can’t don’t have to work anymore because we own some real estate that is not true so my advice to people is it’s like you have a good amount of money saved and you need to have a good amount of money coming in from an income because owning investment real estate is expensive it is and you never know what’s going to happen so that you will need money to make a big repair right I mean our

Third investment property we bought was that duplex in Oklahoma City.

It’s a historic home. So it’s old, it’s gonna need more.

When things break, it’s gonna cost more. And you know, it was rocking right along, doing all right. But again, we put 20 % down on that one. And I mean, maybe a cash flow $200 a month after the payment, after the mortgage.

That’s the common misconception. I think people who don’t understand real estate think that landlords are like taking all their money and cash flowing so much, and that’s not true either.

No, so after your mortgage payment, you know, your insurance, your taxes, if you’re cash flowing $200 a month, which in today’s world is kind of tough to do. It’s tough to go find a property, buy it and make that math work. That’s why a lot of people aren’t buying right now because…

They’re lucky to even break even, you know, but even at $200 a month times 12, I mean, a month’s in a year. I mean, what is that? Like $2 ,400 a year in profit. All that takes is one repair, big repair, and that $2 ,400 is gone, or the tenant moves out unexpectedly and you’ve got a month or two of no rent coming in. So that’s gone. And so is there a false perception out there that that you could now long term, you will make it’s very good. You get tax deductions every year. That’s a win. When that property is paid off one day, that’ll be a big win. But in the meantime, like you’re not getting rich right after you buy a rental property.

That was what I was going to ask. Like, what is the benefit of owning one? And I think you just said a couple of things right there.

You know, they allow you to depreciate the property. So if the property’s worth 200 ,000, you’re able to depreciate that 200 ,000 off of your taxes every year. And you take the price that the house is worth and I think they allow you to break it over 27 and a half years. So whatever 200 ,000 divided by 27 and a half is, I don’t know that number, but let’s just say it’s 9 ,000 a year. You get to deduct 9 ,000 a year in depreciation off of your taxes.

So that’s a cool thing.

So even if you made 2400 bucks a year and had no repairs, you know, you’d have a $9 ,000 deduction so that 2400 bucks is tax -free.

So that’s a win. But remember that third one we bought, it was, I don’t know, four years in, we realized there was a humongous plumbing issue. Yes. And they had to, so the main sewer line that went from the house to the city main.

was trashed, collapsed. I mean, it was like, whatever, 100 years old. And they had, we found out there’s a duplex next to us and then the city main is on the other side of that duplex in an alley. And they had to dig a trench from our property under or kind of right around the corner of the other property and they, in that city main, they had to tear up the concrete and dig a hole like 15 feet deep. They had to make it big enough for like a truck to get in and like make it secure so a guy can work. It was a $30 ,000 repair.

Yeah, that wasn’t fun. Repairs like that aren’t fun because you can’t see it. It’s not like making cosmetic changes to a house and it’s like, well, this is beautiful. No, this is under the ground.

We might’ve owned that property four years at that point. So anything we had made on it at all was completely gone.

would say no however it is beneficial and for us we like real estate we understand it that’s what we choose to put our money into yeah it doesn’t work well for everyone no and it’s like I say it’s a long -term play you know 20 years after you buy that rental property it’s gonna be a really good thing mm -hmm but your first handful of years like don’t have the thought that you’re just gonna buy something and then now it’s gonna make you a money and you’re gonna be rich no I mean you’re gonna be lucky in today’s world to buy a property you rent it out and break even every month so that’s just real talk for you guys yes Kimmer is investment our investment properties worthwhile yes you just got to understand the game you have to understand the game like we say all the time you have to buy things for a good price

and you need to have the right mindset going into it. Yeah. Okay, next question. How did you know that you wanted a large family? We just got married and we would love to create what you guys have created.

Yeah, and I think also have kids before you think you’re ready, before you think you can afford them and because God will always provide and it also encourages you to work harder when you have a family to provide for.

Yeah, it does. It gives you some responsibility quick, fast, and in a hurry, but it’s also like to us, the most rewarding thing in life.

So how did we know we wanted a large family?

Well, we knew we wanted to have at least four. You know, we talked about that, I think before we got married.

Once we started having them, we were like, we got to four. I mean, I think we both started, we grew in our faith and reading scripture and all that kind of stuff and just kind of felt the conviction that, I don’t know that God calls us to stop having kids.

That’s a personal conviction that we have. We just don’t feel, we don’t feel like we need to take matters into our own hands.

Yeah. Not everybody feels that way and that’s fine. But for us answering the question, we feel like that God doesn’t say to stop having kids.

Does that mean it’s easy? No. Does that mean it’s worth it? Yes.

And you know, you haven’t had any health problems or anything like that where we had to like not have any more kids due to health reasons. That’s different.

That’s God has blessed us in that way. So we always knew we wanted a large family Did we think our family would be as big as it is? No, but also it’s so much better than if we would have planned it our way It’s the best.

Yeah, and You know if you’ve got no kids you think about having seven kids. Yes. Yeah, that’s that’s a hard to even imagine But on our experience you just you have one at a time. Yes for too long It’s like it’s not just not that big a deal.

Yeah, you you you definitely grow with each child you have as a person and Yeah, if I would have gone from a zero to seven, right? Well, that would have been scary but going from one and then to two which was a big transition from one to two once you get to like five like that’s another really big transition because

You got to find the car that’ll fit everybody. You know, you just have to learn how to go places with a large family. Everything’s just a little bit more of a challenge in some senses logistically, but you grow with each child and you learn.

I think there’s also a correlation between having a lot of kids and building a successful career. I think you look at a lot of successful people, there’s a lot of them that have a whole bunch of kids. And I think it helps you learn how to manage a lot of things.

It does. It helps in that. So now you can grow more in your capacity at work because you’re just used to handling a lot. And I think those two go hand in hand.

One of my favorite things things that we say a lot is like if you want something done ask a busy person Yeah, there’s a lot to that. I think as a person who knows how to handle a lot I would much rather like I would rush mother much rather hire a real estate agent Who’s busy who has a lot going on then someone who is like I sell three houses a year So I can dedicate a lot of time to your house I mean sure because you have time because you don’t sell much right, but also you don’t know how to handle much, right? So when things happen Because they happen They’re not gonna be able to get the job done as well as efficiently because they don’t have the experience They don’t have the capacity I’d rather hire somebody that’s busy who has a lot going on and who has proven that they can handle a lot. Yep, and having a bunch of kids does that so it definitely does that have a bunch have a bunch of kids That’s what we believe if God allows you and Blesses you and gives you Pray for discernment pray for God’s wisdom and you’ll feel the peace on on which way you should go. Yeah How do you find time to spend time together with so many children and how do you get one -on -one time? Yeah It’s a great question and it is something you have to be intentional about Because if you’re not your days will roll will control you. Yeah, they will and and for us like in the season We’re in we have seven kids under 12 currently. So date nights are not a common thing for us Yeah, I wish they were and and we want to get back to that point We did pretty well for a while. Also, we live in more of a rural setting now, too So like

We would have to drive pretty far to even like go somewhere for a date, right? so We’re just in a season right now when we’re not getting a lot of like Date nights where we dress up and go somewhere which I think’s fine life is full of seasons for us right now. I Think what works best for us is we take like 30 minutes a night that we get everybody fed we get everybody bathed and Then we have the kids watch a show together Hang out together. We put the baby in his little jumper, right? And then we have time in our room together, right? I think that’s what works well for us It’s we get to talk we get to just share about our days ask each other questions Because if we didn’t do that Gosh, we wouldn’t get to talk as much as I think we should right?

know in our room and bathroom talking and stuff like that so we’ll both take shower you know talk get the evening kind of going and the kids are in the living room you know either watching a show or you know reading a book or homework or whatever usually at that point they’re just watching a show yeah but that’s intentional so it’s not like I’m in the bedroom and you’re out there with the kids and I’m showering I’m getting these right and then we flip -flop and I’m back so we never have time together it’s a it’s a deal it’s like okay they’re fed they’re watching now it’s time for us to go shower and get ready for the evening and we’ll shut the door and we go into our you know master suite or whatever and spend 30 to 45 minutes uninterrupted with the kids together just talking and that that allows you to stay connected before that we eat supper as a family we’ve talked about that on the other podcast and that’s man there’s just not many families that do that anymore

Yeah, and something we’ve started doing, you know, we do the highs, lows, that’s always a good thing. But something new we’ve been doing around the table is we have each kid look to their right and to their left and they say something that they like about the person beside them. We did that last night and it went surprisingly well.

Yeah, we’re usually not totally alone unless the boys are still sleeping, but sometimes they are with us. But it’s still quieter, because we have five that are already at school.

That’s cool, yeah. And then you come to the city and work usually on Mondays and Wednesdays, and every once in a while, we’ll get together and have lunch.

Yeah, so, yeah. And then Sundays, every Sunday, we’re at church. It’s very predictable. I mean, you go to Sunday school, and then we go to church, and then after church, we eat as a family.

And a lot of times, as you can hear, it’s not just me and you. A lot of times it is the kids with us, but we’ve created this big family, and so we like to spend time together as a family.

Well, I think an important thing to note right here is a lot of families that have more than one kid, even if it’s just two, they’ll put them in different sports, different things, and then one parent goes one way and the other goes the other. Well, if you do that, and that’s your choice, I’m telling you, that’s a choice. You don’t have to do that. Some parents, well, we have to because little Johnny wants to be on the good team.

Yeah, and and so for us We are excited about wrestling as a family unit because all of our boys wrestle right our daughter wrestles in practice She doesn’t compete but she does practice. So anytime there’s wrestling practice six kids go with you Yeah, it’s pretty funny and they all go to wrestling practice when we go to wrestling tournaments on Saturdays Five boys compete and Riley our daughter goes to cheer them on right? The baby is the only one yet He’s one who doesn’t compete so he either goes with us or I hire I have a babysitter come to the house for him for that day Right, but the point of this is we all go to the tournament together

When you’re not wrestling you’re cheering on your siblings. We go have lunch together while we’re at the turnip We spend the whole day together, right?

It’s a it’s a family thing So like I was saying some families go separate directions And I think that’s a recipe for disaster if you’re doing that you better be very intentional and find other ways to spend time together throughout the week You better not take your eye off the ball when it comes to your family because over time You’ll just grow right apart and without even realizing it and little by little you’ll look up at the end and go oh, man Yeah, I mean you know for us.

We have one girl six boys So like our daughter obviously does other things than our boys do she does cheer and she’s doing basketball this year Yeah, well I’ve plugged in our dates for our seasons this year And she’s gonna have basketball games on like Monday and Thursday evenings, so we are all going to watch her play, right?

Okay, on wrestling practice nights, we all go to wrestling practice. Now, some people, each kid does a different sport. Can you do that? Sure, but like you said, you better be intentional about doing things together. I think it gets really hard when you’re going here, I’m going there, and then you don’t spend that quality time in the evenings together. When do you talk? When do you spend time together? Are you even a family unit anymore?

That’s the hard part. This is kind of an unpopular opinion sometimes, but I think as a parent, you have to be the leader in your household. And not all the time, if little Johnny wants to go play some off -sport, you can’t just say yes, because little Johnny wants to do it, if it wrecks your entire family schedule.

Well, I had to tell Benayanat the other day, he’s like, I want to play basketball. And I’m like, we don’t play basketball in this family. We wrestle. You’re a boy, you’re going to wrestle.

Gosh, I played basketball. I love basketball. Our daughter’s playing basketball, but she’s the oldest She’s a girl her schedule is gonna be different than the boys for the boys We wrestle in our family. Yeah, do I you know, do you want to play basketball? You can play for fun, but basketball and wrestling are literally the same season It would never work for our family. We love what wrestling teaches you right?

We’re all in we want you to be with us every Saturday when we wrestle So we remain a family unit You’re gonna wrestle right and for us the sports is we you know Important because we want our kids to learn the lessons and the character building of sports Not so they can Go become a professional athlete one day. Like as a person, yes I could have, like I had charisma, I could get clients, but would I have known what the heck I was talking about? No. I got my license at 25, which was still a young, I still didn’t know a lot, but we did own our first home. I had had two jobs outside of college by that time. I had spent six years as a waitress learning communication skills. We had our first baby, like I was an adult, I was ready, and I was like at a good point to learn. So, can you legally get a real estate license at 18? Yes, should you? In my opinion, I think you should go live life.

be more prepared to be a professional. And also the things that people don’t think about when they get a real estate license is it costs to have a license.

You have to get your license, which does cost money. I mean, $2 ,500 somewhere around there just to get it. But to keep your license is gonna cost you about that much every single year. So if you’re not selling properties, how are you gonna pay for that?

They never even talk to somebody that’s actually in that field and shadow them for a day Well a few examples of that you wanted to be a strength and conditioning coach in college Yeah, and you went and did an internship Shadowed it went they no way like this is not for me, you know, and it’s like I mean I had a different mindset in college I just knew I wanted to get a degree and move on with my life and didn’t I didn’t think that the degree Really mattered and it turns out it kind of doesn’t but you know I just wanted to get it my degree and move on so I picked something and But I thought I wanted to be a strength conditioning coach and then went and interned at Uco and was like no this ain’t this isn’t this isn’t for me So I would encourage you if you want to be in real estate ask if you can go shadow a successful realtor like her

when she’s going on some appointments or something like that and see what it’s really like you might like it you might not like it at all well that’s the thing too and for myself too I did internships in college and they really showed me what I didn’t want to do I interned at a news station and loved the work I guess you would say did not like the lifestyle behind the work right so I’m very thankful I had a boss at that time who was very honest with me and he’s like I want you to know before you decide to go down this path like I don’t even remember the percentage you told me but a very high percentage of people in the news Oklahoma Grassfed Beef business end up divorced right and we got we actually got engaged while I was interning there are my senior year and so like obviously we were getting married soon I’m so thankfully told me shout out Brian is that a disaster because most of those anchors are

reporters you know they show up at like three in the morning and then you know and then they’re off at whatever time but in other words they have a schedule that is not conducive to a normal work schedule that’s right and i there’s no way we would have been able to have a large family if i worked in that field so could i have sure i think i would have liked the work but i’m glad that the lifestyle would have never worked for us yeah there’s a lot of value in shadowing and going and trying a job out before you spend money 2500 bucks on a license and all that to then learn that you don’t like it yes i interned at a da’s office because i thought i wanted to go to law school also um that was in college during a summer did not want to did not want to pursue that right so and that what if i would have gotten a law degree and spent a hundred thousand plus and people do this and then they go actually work in the field and they’re like i don’t even like this maybe you like the law but do you actually want to be a lawyer on a day -to -day basis right

So we’re gonna jump into this next question because I think this is just a good segue and Then this will be our last one. Okay. What do you think about college for your kids? Is it worth it these days? You got me to answer that well, I mean I know what you’re gonna say, okay And I know what I’m gonna say that I want to say first We don’t know the best answer for your children and it all depends on what they think they want to do after What as a job? Okay, true. That is what it depends on is your degree going to Directly help you get a job that is going to make money that is gonna pay for the college debt.

Okay now go My answer is as a general rule. No, it is not worth it

As a general rule, I think 40, 50 years ago, you know, people could go and get a degree and then go work for a big company like AT &T or whatever, Southwestern Bell or OG &E, and they paid more for people with a degree. And you could go work there for 30 years and retire with a pension or whatever. Like that, back in those eras, made total sense. In today’s world, I think unless you are for sure what your career’s gonna be, a doctor, I think a nurse you have to, an engineer, like something like that, a lawyer, obviously you have to. Yes. If you’re not gonna do any of those, and you just want a degree in Oklahoma Grassfed Beef business or a degree in, I don’t know, general studies or.

I don’t, any of that kind of stuff, absolutely not. And I say that because I’ve hired hundreds of people in my career so far and a lot of them have degrees and they come to me and I mean, unfortunately they’re still kind of clueless. It’s like they went through four years, they spent 100 ,000 bucks, they’re in debt up to their eyeballs and they’ve never really worked, really worked in the business field.

Right. I personally think we both went to a small college. We both graduated debt -free.

For me, I got scholarships, number one, and I applied for a lot of scholarships and I just kept getting them to fund my education. I also worked as a resident advisor and so I got my room and board free and so like, and then, I mean, I graduated debt -free.

For you, same thing, you worked through college and so you paid as you went, but we went to a very affordable college. I don’t think there’s any reason to go to a super expensive college and take out a loan the whole way through. The small college is not going to stop you from getting a job somewhere because you went to a school that didn’t cost as much.

Honestly, when I interview people now, I don’t even pay attention to if they have a college degree or not. And a lot of Oklahoma Grassfed Beef business owners are that away.

Yeah, for me also, like, yes, we went to a small school, we graduated debt free. I grew so much as a person between 18 and 22. So I have a really hard time saying like, I don’t believe in college.

Do I think you have to have an education? No, I have a master’s degree. I don’t even need it. But did I grow through that period of time? Absolutely. Did I learn how leadership skills, communication, built great friendships? We obviously met each other in college. Did it open my mind to bigger possibilities? Yes, all those things. I had so many wonderful experiences in college. I just think be mindful of what your kids actually want to do with their degree.

And they don’t have to know what they want to do at 18. But don’t, don’t, don’t let them just go take out huge loans when they have no clue what they want to do.

Well, I think people make a mistake because they don’t think about how much am I gonna spend and then when I am done, what is the value of what I received? Absolutely. And when you look at, when you ask yourself those two questions,

Most of the time. Now, if you’re gonna be a doctor, like I said, or something like that, yeah, you have to. But I see so many kids and people that rent our houses and people that work for us and bless their hearts, they’ve got tens of thousands of dollars of student loan debt. Now they got a car loan debt. They can’t buy a house. They’re just in a bad spot and the education they paid for it is doing them no good. And it’s just a very sad thing to see. So you gotta be smart if you wanna go do that and understand it.

That’s right. Just help your kids understand the value, what they’re gonna be spending, that they do have to pay that back when they get out of school, whether they finish or not.

Yes. So you can do great things even by not going to college. Just be mindful. Pray through that. Pray for discernment. And if your kids do go to college, like prepare them as best you can. They need to be really strong in their faith and their convictions and what they know to be true. So that when you send them off, like they’re prepared for the world.

Yeah. And I think colleges are trying to do better now too as far as creating different curriculum because they’re kind of realizing, I don’t know that we’re adding a bunch of value here unless it’s a specified degree that requires it for your field of work. That’s right.
