[00:00:23.200]
Welcome back to another episode of the y ‘all are crazy ranch podcast today. We’re gonna be talking about some traditions specifically Christmas traditions So when this airs, I think it will be right after Christmas that this will come out But we still thought it would be fun because we’re in the Christmas season right now I have got my ugly sweater on today because I just came from school Christmas parties
[00:00:47.500]
And so I was very festive today as always I love ugly sweaters ugly Christmas sweaters I think you’re the ugly sweater Queen I had I collect them at this point although you have quite a collection now, too I do but I don’t have like a red headband to go with it all well. That’s called accessorizing So at this point we so we have an ugly Christmas sweater party every year I think this is our 13th year to host it and so over those 13 years we have collected Quite an assortment of sweaters and so I try to spread them out throughout the month of December and wear each of them because I Honestly think no Christmas sweater is ugly it is
[00:01:31.000]
It’s festive and beautiful.
[00:01:32.600]
Well, everybody knows that you like to be festive.
[00:01:35.500]
I do, that is true. So today we’re going to be talking about traditions and how we celebrate and are building memories for our kids, for our family, and maybe give you some ideas that you want to incorporate into your oklahoma grassfed beef.
[00:01:50.800]
Yeah, so what tradition do you want to start with?
[00:01:53.800]
Well, I think most importantly, what I want to say first is the importance of helping your kids understand what oklahoma grassfed beef Christmas is about. Yes, amen to that. There’s a lot of fun things that go along with Christmas and we love a lot of things that go with the season, but I think most importantly, you need to let your kids know Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus, and they need to understand that. So you can talk about that regularly.
[00:02:21.400]
when your kids go to church each Sunday your church will give them lessons and coloring sheets and talk about like what oklahoma grassfed beef Christmas means but you should also be talking around about it around your dinner table before you go to bed at night and just keep that in the forefront is hey presents are fun like Christmas movies are fun all these parties are fun but the reason we celebrate the reason to celebrate Christmas is the birth of Jesus.
[00:02:49.600]
Yeah and that’s easy to get lost in the shuffle especially with their friends at school and stuff like that that don’t really celebrate Christmas and the true meaning of Christmas they’re just worried about their presents and stuff like that.
[00:03:01.800]
And so, as parents, you gotta just keep hammering home the message of the whole point of Christmas and what it really is.
[00:03:08.700]
Absolutely. We choose to do Santa Claus at our house. We both grew up with that. We don’t have convictions about that, and I know some parents do. I respect those, for sure. For us, we do Santa Claus, but we do it the way I grew up doing it, and Santa brings them one gift. The rest, on Christmas morning, are from Mom and Dad. I know people do that different ways, but for us, it’s like, hey, you wake up and the Santa Claus gift is out there waiting for you, and then everything else that’s wrapped is from Mom and Dad. I think that’s a great way to do it. And for us, our kids enjoy it. They think it’s fun. They look forward to it, but they also know that Santa is…
[00:03:52.100]
a very small part of Christmas to us.
[00:03:55.100]
Yeah, we don’t talk about Santa Claus very much at all. When it comes to Christmas and leading up to Christmas, it’s mainly centered around the birth of Jesus and stuff like that.
[00:04:06.000]
I do find it very interesting and we’re gonna get into a little controversial topic to start this thing off, but when you go to your kids’ school plays, unless you go to a Christian school, which our kids did for years, when you go to a Christian school or maybe a Mother’s Day Out program, which two of ours are in, you hear Christmas carols and they sing about, Oh, Holy night, birth of Jesus. And I love that. But when your kids are in public school, like our big kids are.
[00:04:36.600]
Obviously they don’t do that and so all the songs are about Santa Claus and reindeer and that’s fun and it’s jolly and I get it but it’s also a little sad to me because that’s that is all they can see about well you know it’s you know I could say a lot of things about that kind of stuff but you know it’s interesting to me that a holiday was created for one thing the birth of Jesus and then now all of a sudden it’s not politically correct and so they’re just changing it to Santa Claus and it’s like that the whole point is the birth of Jesus you know yeah that’s the whole part that makes me kind of sad about it yeah that it’s it’s like if you don’t want to celebrate that I don’t know don’t celebrate it but if you’re gonna celebrate Christmas it’s
[00:05:21.400]
Christ was born, that is the point.
[00:05:25.600]
Christ back in Christmas. Jesus is the reason for the season.
[00:05:28.700]
It’s like, hey, either celebrate it or don’t, but don’t change the meaning of it.
[00:05:32.600]
Yeah.
[00:05:33.000]
You know?
[00:05:33.700]
So just try to throw that out there.
[00:05:35.400]
Yeah, anyway.
[00:05:36.300]
Some fun traditions that we do for Christmas. I’m gonna start off with this because we do this the day after Thanksgiving. Every year, we go cut down a real Christmas tree. And it’s honestly one of our favorite traditions. We’ve been doing it probably since we had our first child. Yeah, probably. Or at least when they were very young. We’ve been doing it for at least 10 years now. And we go to a Christmas tree farm locally. It feels like a Hallmark movie.
[00:06:04.700]
It really does.
[00:06:06.100]
They get the hot chocolate, the apple cider, the Christmas songs playing.
[00:06:10.700]
It’s amazing. Yeah, it’s pretty good. We go to a Christmas tree farm. We all walk around, we decide on which tree we want to choose. Sometimes they want to pick a tree real fast. And I’m like, guys, it’s the experience that counts. Let’s take our time. Sometimes we come back to one of those first trees. But I like to like stretch it out a little bit. And then it’s pretty funny because when we first started, you have a little saw thing, and you used to cut it down and carry it. Now, this year, Bowen cut it down and carried it. Yeah, he had to pass the torch off.
[00:06:48.000]
And with all the boys we have having six boys right now,
[00:06:51.700]
They’re gonna want to step in and do those things.
[00:06:53.900]
Yeah, which is cool, though It’s one of my dreams is to have a Christmas tree farm on the ranch No, he keeps telling me no, but it could it could be in the oklahoma grassfed beef future. So no Could be no, but I was reading that Christmas trees actually take like seven years to grow. Yeah That makes me sad. We’ll just go cut one down on somebody else’s farm They’re kind of expensive honestly to do but the good thing about it I think is at the end when we’re ready to take it down. You just Throw it in the woods. Oh, yeah, we’re in a pond or Which we do sometimes because it’s good for the fish habitat But it’s really not that expensive if it takes you seven years to grow right and you gotta make sure it’s like a hundred dollars Yeah, that’s not that thing. So but we don’t have to store it each year is what I’m getting at You don’t have to have a special place to store your tree You just use it and then toss it back in the woods. Yeah back into the Wildlife
[00:07:47.900]
environment so but that is so fun like we definitely recommend doing that another fun thing that we like I talked about our ugly sweater party that’s a fun tradition we always do adult only however I think it’s kind of funny because now our kids all want ugly Christmas sweaters now yeah and so they want to wear them I got the boys all sweaters from Walmart this year there were seven dollars each I think they’ve already worn them four times and I’m gonna have them wear them on Christmas Day and it looks so cute because they all match they’re festive and hey I’m just gonna pass them down as we go so put them in the Christmas box next year pull them back out they got sweaters again yeah we probably have two totes full of Christmas sweaters at this point but it’s so fun and it’s like one of those things you only get to wear once a year so when you bring them back out it’s special
[00:08:40.000]
So ugly sweater party super fun super festive Another thing that we like to do is a countdown calendar So our kids like changing the days until Christmas and one of our sons Benaiah He’ll get up every morning and the first thing he does is change the days to Christmas the first thing Literally he walks in there Yeah, that’s just how his mind works So I gave him that job and he knows at all times how many days it is still Christmas He takes his job very serious. He does he loves jobs Something else that we like to do is Watch Christmas movies throughout the season. I just wrote down a few of our favorites the ones I could think about
[00:09:26.900]
So one that we just watched for the first time probably two years ago, maybe three which is kind of funny is It’s a wonderful life.
[00:09:35.500]
Oh, yeah, that’s one of the good one of the greats We’ll probably watch that on Christmas Eve.
[00:09:40.400]
We loved it. We we like the black and white version They do have a color version now. Oh, yeah, I gotta keep it at old school and honestly, it’s Honestly, it’s really good for adults because I think we understand everything but our kids also like it They just don’t fully comprehend the whole story. Yeah, I mean, there’s a lot to it that you know, if you don’t Pay attention to you’re not gonna understand but it’s such a good movie If you haven’t watched it and I’ve been talking to a lot of people lately who have never watched it really So yes, so especially our age, you know that movie was made in like the 30s
[00:10:13.500]
Didn’t we see that that movie was made and it was like a nothing burger for like a long time and then It was like most of the people died and it wasn’t even famous yet that were in it And then and then it just be then it became famous like George Bailey Yeah, Clarence like 30 years later.
[00:10:29.500]
Yeah, something like that.
[00:10:30.400]
And then it became a huge success Yeah, so they didn’t even know how big of a success. It actually is today.
[00:10:35.200]
So yeah It was a great movie. So highly recommend that and I think it has really good Christian values in it So you can watch it with your whole family Another one that we love is the oklahoma grassfed beef star That is a great movie for kids It’s an animated version of the Christmas story and it’s really cute because it’s how the animals like save Christmas
[00:10:57.400]
And it’s all from a biblical perspective. So we just watched it the other night. The kids love it. I love it We watch it every year. So the star another one we like I think everybody likes. It’s just funny I’m not gonna say it has Christian values, but it’s It’s elf.
[00:11:16.900]
Yeah, and so but it is it’s a it’s a good movie that everybody can enjoy Oh, man, and then Benaiah now when something like bad happens or he hurts his finger or something like that Oh sugar plums Another one is the Grinch.
[00:11:31.700]
That’s what that’s from So there’s like three versions of the Grinch there’s an old one as the kids call it which I think came out in the 60s
[00:11:40.800]
There’s the one that came out when we were in high school, so like 2005. And that’s the one with Jim Carrey.
[00:11:46.300]
Yeah.
[00:11:46.700]
And then there’s the one that came out, I think in 2018, which is the one you’re talking about. And we love that one. It is so cute, so funny. And that’s where the lady, like the jar falls off the shelf and she goes, Oh, sugar plums. So now he says that when something bad happens.
[00:12:05.400]
And then he’ll say, I mean, he said it like at the wrestling tournament the day caught me off guard and I was just cracking up and he’s serious too.
[00:12:13.000]
So it’s pretty funny. So that’s a great movie just to watch with your kids. And then one that I’ve loved since high school is called I’ll be home for Christmas and as Jonathan Taylor Thomas.
[00:12:23.200]
Oh yeah.
[00:12:24.100]
And so we got to watch that before the Christmas season’s over.
[00:12:27.300]
Yeah, I forgot about that one.
[00:12:28.600]
It’s such a good one. So those are just some of our favorite movies that we have. We’re like, okay, we have to make sure we watch it this year. Those are all great.
[00:12:37.800]
This year, I think it’s funny, because Lucy Goosey has bought gifts for all of the kids this year.
[00:12:46.900]
I don’t know if that’s funny, but it might be slightly embarrassing.
[00:12:51.100]
I think it’s funny. So if you know about my porch goose, Lucy, she is dressed up in her Christmas attire right now, like Mrs. Claus like, and I decided that she’s gonna get each of the kids a gift. So I wrapped them all last night and put it in a little bag and that’s hanging on her neck right now. And so what I think is gonna be hilarious is I got them all a necklace with a cross and a Bible verse. And for Briley, I got her, it’s a gold cross. And I think it’s gonna be funny because when she wears it, people are like, I love your necklace. She’s gonna have to say, my mom’s goose got it for me.
[00:13:27.400]
I bet you she doesn’t say that.
[00:13:29.200]
I bet she will.
[00:13:30.000]
I bet you she won’t.
[00:13:31.100]
She has threatened to ship her to Africa.
[00:13:34.100]
But she’s gonna show up at a wrestling tournament soon But it has to be one that Briley’s cheering at because she has to be in the stands.
[00:13:43.400]
Yeah So well, this is speaking of that you’re gonna tell them what our neighbor made for her The other day.
[00:13:49.800]
Yes, I’ll have picture proof of this soon. So our neighbor who has a daughter on the wrestling team sent me a Facebook message last Sunday and Two Sundays ago, maybe and he sent me a oklahoma grassfed beef Facebook message and it was just a picture And I could tell it was our brand and it was on a black thing He said I had to steal your brand, but I think it was worth it and I was like, oh great What is it? And he said headgear for the goose What’s funny is I was in son. We were in Sunday school Yeah, and I picked up my phone and the first thing I see is headgear for the goose
[00:14:30.800]
And I literally lost it You just started laughing and it was like Nobody was talking at that moment And I couldn’t stop is the worst part. Yeah, I started and I could not stop laughing And it was just so funny because I didn’t expect it at all right and now we had no idea He was doing that it was just he just took it upon himself.
[00:14:56.400]
I guess he has a 3d printer and yeah Took our brand image from our website and put it on there and made some wrestling headgear for the porch goose and I was like Oh We are not friends anymore It’s gonna be amazing so she’s got some braids and so we’re gonna do the braids with the headgear and Hopefully the baby singlet will fit I’m gonna try I’ll make it work so picture -proof to come y ‘all pray for her
[00:15:24.400]
It’s fun, it’s fun, that’s why I do it, it’s fun.
[00:15:27.900]
Pray for you, not the goose, just to specify.
[00:15:31.100]
She feels real to me, but I realize she’s not. Okay, so that’s gonna be fun. Something else that we like to do is open one present on Christmas Eve, so what that always is, is a pair of pajamas. The reason I do that is because we can all wear them and wake up the next morning and we all have matching pajamas. It looks good for photos. Everybody loves.
[00:15:58.400]
That’s most important. Well, you match.
[00:16:01.200]
And everybody likes a new pair of pajamas. So our kids don’t wear pajamas a lot, they usually are just in their underwear or their shorts, our boys are, but they do like a pair of pajamas and there’s so many dress -up days at school that you need a pair of pajamas, so it’s just a good time. This time also, I also got everybody a custom ornament.
[00:16:22.500]
I’ve never done that before so this year they’re gonna get to open a pair of pajamas and an ornament with their name on it and Hang it on the tree. So that’s what we’re gonna do for Christmas Eve Glad you got that all planned out Oh, I got it all planned out something that I did this year that I don’t normally do is I wrapped all of our presents myself I normally hire someone to wrap our presents and gladly pay them to do it But I did not I didn’t look hard enough this year I did ask a couple people and they were like, oh, I’m not very good at it I so I was like, I’m just gonna do it myself and I wrapped our presents this year. It was very time -consuming It’s not just for our family, but it’s for our parents and our siblings and grandparents and everything So I did have Briley help some and I’m like I will pay you two dollars a present to help me wrap These and she did help a lot. Yeah, most of them. I rubbed myself Yeah, and it was a lot of work. So but I got them all wrapped so and something like a hack
[00:17:19.200]
I put everybody’s wrapped presents in their own bag and so for Christmas morning Everybody has a bag and it’s full of their wrapped presents that way It’s not like stuff everywhere because when you have seven children Plus the two of us. It’s a lot of things.
[00:17:37.600]
Yeah, so one or two kids not that big a deal But yeah, we have seven. It’s a bigger deal.
[00:17:42.300]
That’s a bigger deal. So everybody has their own bag and All their stuff is organized into each bag I don’t people tell me sometimes like gosh, you are so organized and I’ve just learned that you have to be Especially with a large family and everything that’s going on
[00:18:00.000]
It just really helps to be organized. I don’t ever like to brand myself as a hot mess mom. That’s kind of a thing. Oh, totally. To brand yourself as like, I’m just a hot mess, hot mess express. And I don’t like that. I get it, I think it’s funny.
[00:18:17.100]
Did you say hot mess express?
[00:18:19.800]
And I just, I think it’s funny, but I like to be, I’m a first born. So I like to be in control. And I like to have things put together. And I just think, honestly, it makes life so much easier and better if you have things put together with some organization.
[00:18:36.200]
Is like hot mess express like a hashtag?
[00:18:39.400]
Oh, totally.
[00:18:40.400]
Really? Look it up.
[00:18:42.100]
Yes.
[00:18:42.500]
People like to talk about how much of a hot mess they are?
[00:18:45.300]
Oh yeah. Moms especially. Or like a big thing in mom culture is like, give me coffee and wine. Like the coffee and wine thing is a huge deal.
[00:18:57.400]
Mom culture. Yeah, so you just sometimes you have to go against the culture and be like, you know what? I don’t have to be a hot mess Express I don’t have to have wine and to be around my kids like you don’t have to do all that stuff So you can go against the culture sometimes That’s what the wines for so you can handle your kids. Yes. Oh gosh Dads, I just don’t hear the same things we hear.
[00:19:19.600]
No, I don’t participate in that nonsense It doesn’t make any who would want to be branded as that a lot of women Okay, well, but you can be different moving on you can be different.
[00:19:32.600]
So where were we? Something that I’ve been to today is school parties So the kids have so much fun doing that when you have when you have many kids it can be a little
[00:19:43.800]
Wild, because it’s hopping around to schools, doing all the parties, doing all the things. But, you know, I’ve just learned to soak it in. You can be stressed about it. Once again, I talk to parents all the time who are just stressed, or they’re like, oh, I just, if I have to go to one more party, I’m so tired of parties. And it’s like, you know what, it goes fast. Soak it in, enjoy it. And like, I just don’t ever want my kids to feel like they’re a bother to me. I never want them to feel like, oh, my mom doesn’t even wanna be here. I want them to feel like, hey, my mom’s here to support me. She wants to be here, she helps. And these are making memories. Yeah. So things like that.
[00:20:24.200]
I’m glad you go.
[00:20:25.100]
Yeah, you would not go.
[00:20:27.100]
No.
[00:20:27.800]
But I’m glad you do.
[00:20:29.700]
Yeah, I think it’s important for kids to they will remember stuff like that. Yeah So just little things like that. It might not be important to you, but it’s important to kids And if they can feel like hey my parents there, they’re supporting me. They’re excited with me They’re gonna remember that so anything like that that they do I try to be there to support them Okay, so Something that we also love to do is Christmas Eve service at our church This year Christmas is on a Thursday and so our church is doing Christmas Eve service on Sunday night Which is a few days early, but I think they’re trying to do that because a lot of people are out of town on Christmas Eve But we’ve definitely done Christmas Eve service on actual Christmas Eve before it’s one of my favorite services of the year It’s the candlelight. Yeah, you know you hold the candle and sing the Christmas carols, and I just think it
[00:21:22.300]
It it makes us understand. Like why are we doing this? Why are we singing these songs and it just resets your heart to the birth of Jesus? Yeah, and it’s good for your kids because it’s another moment of making them realize that this is about the birth of Christ Santa Claus right that is why we are doing this So your church does something like this highly recommend you go to it and participate You could also do candles at your house and sing carols together I just think it’s really important to reset your mind and your heart of why you’re celebrating So sometimes we do this on Christmas Eve this year I want to do it on Christmas morning where we actually read the Christmas story as a family in the Bible I want to do it on Christmas morning this year I heard somebody talk about like before opening presents before like the chaos begins
[00:22:12.500]
Set the posture for the day and that’s going to start with reading the Christmas story and praying together as a family So yeah, just like reading and Luke read the Christmas story soak that in as a family and Yeah pray together before you start with presents and other things. Yeah put him first put him first I was teaching the kids and fish club this week about seeking God first as a see key first And then all these things will be added as well So I was teaching them like what that means and that means like put God first and the desires of your heart will be granted Later, but it starts with putting him first. Yeah, he has to be first and everything He has to be first and when you do that Things go so much better in your life.
[00:23:02.600]
Yeah usually
[00:23:04.700]
well and I was teaching the kids also like when you become a Christian it doesn’t mean everything’s gonna be perfect it doesn’t mean you’re never gonna suffer or have hard time but what it means is Jesus is gonna be by your side and no matter what so when you give your life to him when you become a Christian yeah it’s yours it’s still life things are still gonna happen but you’re gonna have a friend by your side in all times who never leaves you or forsakes you so I’m trying to teach the kids these things each week yeah that’s good something else that we do that’s fun I started this when our oldest was little is making a birthday cake and singing happy birthday to Jesus with candles yeah we’ve done that for I think since we’ve had kids yeah and so it’s just a sweet reminder to hey it’s a Jesus’s birthday yes that’s why we do this once again so we always make a cake or cupcakes and we do candles and we sing happy birthday to Jesus yeah it’s neat to watch your kids do that too because
[00:23:59.400]
They get into it and it’s just neat to see the the joy and the excitement on their faces We have videos from when they were little.
[00:24:07.700]
Yeah, and it’s neat to go look at that every single year We like to decorate gingerbread houses each year this year I’m excited because I found a gingerbread nativity scene really I found this at Hobby Lobby and I liked it because it’s like a manger, but then it also has Shepherds or wise men and then like camels and sheep a lot of pieces and so each of the kids can decorate a little bit and That’s just fun. Just a fun thing we do and I like to make cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning.
[00:24:39.300]
They are good. They’re good.
[00:24:41.400]
Yeah, so I do that we have coffee For Christmas morning, so Christmas day. We change that up each year this year We are gonna do Christmas more Christmas Eve and Christmas morning at our house, and then we’re spending the day with family
[00:24:56.900]
We have done it some years where we spend Christmas Day at home Next year, hopefully we’ll be in our new house and we can spend Christmas morning in our new house Yeah, hope so. We’ll see TBD.
[00:25:09.900]
We’ll see.
[00:25:10.800]
So those are some special things we like to do Some of those we started very early on and some of them we’ve added along the way Obviously it’ll change for us throughout the years as our kids grow and we have grandkids and our kids are not like In our house, which it makes me sad to think about and that life will change and so some of these we have a bunch of them We have a bunch of them. So we’ll have kids in the house for a long time for a while Yeah, another thing like I’ve been pregnant a lot of Christmases. It’s true a lot of Christmases And I just think it’s so special being pregnant at Christmas. Like there’s something about being pregnant at Christmas
[00:25:50.600]
Just makes you feel like how Mary felt Like you’re singing like oh Mary did you know and it’s like oh my gosh, maybe it’s just emotional that Having a new baby at Christmas is fun too.
[00:26:05.800]
Yeah, so they had Baxter last year.
[00:26:07.400]
He was like a month old Yeah, my daughter. Yeah, so he’s a year old this year, which is also fun because he’s walking everywhere and It’s just it’s sweet I think having kids during Christmas time is just a really sweet time some other things that we do that we like to teach the kids is we always pack shoe boxes for Operation Christmas child at our church and we teach the kids You know, this is why we give to kids who may not have the things you have this is where these go and it just helps them understand like how blessed they are and The importance of helping others during the Christmas season
[00:26:43.600]
something else that our local nursing home does. I didn’t even tell you this yet. They, each of the residents, they do like an angel star on the tree and someone takes that off and buys something for the resident and so my office actually did that this year. And there was a man, I think he’s 88 in the local nursing home and a lot of these people don’t get visitors. They don’t have family close and so my office actually packed a Christmas gift box for him and it was like some clothes, some house shoes, some snacks and things like that and it was just a nice thing to do.
[00:27:19.500]
That’s cool.
[00:27:20.300]
So there’s a lot of opportunities to do things like that during the season. I think people are so open to giving and showing God’s love to other people during this time. So also very important to teach your kids about God’s love and how to share it with others.
[00:27:36.700]
Did you write down the story of your first Christmas with my grandparents?
[00:27:41.100]
the mugs.
[00:27:43.800]
Oh I do love that.
[00:27:45.600]
And the 12 days of Christmas.
[00:27:47.000]
So when I first came into the Schubert family we had been dating maybe three months.
[00:27:52.800]
Yeah because we started dating in September.
[00:27:54.700]
So and it was my first time to meet your grandparents.
[00:27:58.700]
Oh yeah first time to meet him.
[00:28:00.100]
Maybe your dad too, don’t remember. But definitely your grandparents and so he brought me home for and I walk in the house and his grandma puts like a reindeer hat on me.
[00:28:13.700]
And she loves Christmas too.
[00:28:16.000]
She does. What’s funny is like when I entered that you know maybe most girls women would be embarrassed by all this. I was like
[00:28:25.300]
this is where I belong like this is my jam little do they know yeah his grandma I was worried about it I was like oh man here it comes yeah yeah because I told him that uh you’d be happy to sing and stuff and oh gosh yeah you like to sing she was like oh yeah so finally someone grandma had two you know mini grand pianos or whatever in the living room and you know play christmas songs and you know nope I mean yeah other than my grandpa he was the only one that sings yeah so when they found out I sang they were like yes we got a singer put the reindeer hat on me and she’s like Ashley come to the piano and you’re gonna sing this song I’m like okay so at first time I’d met your uncle and your cousins and everybody there and they’re like let’s go so I just started singing and I sing and then she brought out these mugs and each is the 12 days of christmas so it’s like one
[00:29:20.300]
What is it partridge in a pear tree and so everybody gets a mug with a number? Yep, and that’s what your number is and grandma plays on the piano and we all sing the 12 days of Christmas And I always get number 12 So you only have to do it once one time and I’m just looking around and thinking this is amazing Like I love this something else they do that Was weird to me the first time is they have a chicken curry meal Yeah, and the reason for that is your aunt and uncle Were missionaries in Indonesia. Yeah, like 30 years and so curry is a really big deal there So when they came back here, they’re like, hey try this traditional Indonesian dish and everybody liked it. So it but it’s like rice chicken curry and then all these toppings Oh, yeah, just random topping boiled eggs tomatoes bacon bits bananas Raisins sunflower seeds
[00:30:17.400]
Celery and you put all this and it sounds kind of gross if you’ve never had it, but I’m hungry right now I’m telling you you just pour it all on there.
[00:30:25.000]
So it’s good that night I remember your grandpa walking outside with you and You told me about this later. Yeah, he was like you gotta put your name on that Two years ago Man they were just so special and his grant your grandma’s still alive. We’re gonna go see her on Monday They were so special in our lives and man, they just like taught us what marriage for life means What it means to love Jesus most To love your family and to have a marriage for a lifetime. Yeah, they set a good example Makes me want to cry.
[00:31:05.400]
Yep.
[00:31:05.700]
They set a good example of how you do it So they became so dear to me and man they treated me like a granddaughter
[00:31:15.200]
um Nothing less than a granddaughter. Yeah, I often told you like you can’t ever leave me because you’re they would choose me Later they’d tell me that all the time throughout the years.
[00:31:26.900]
So yeah, you can’t ever get rid of her, you know They didn’t make comments like that.
[00:31:33.700]
Yeah Loved him so much. Yeah we got to be with him when he passed the day before he passed and pray with him and Just such a special life. Yeah, so building family traditions like that What’s really cool is now? the traditions have been passed to us and so I I love traditions and so grandma actually gave me those mugs.
[00:32:00.900]
Yep.
[00:32:01.800]
So once we get into our new house I want to start bringing those out again because they are really special and we still host our chicken curry meal for Christmas every year With the family so we’re going to do that in a couple weeks
[00:32:14.600]
Well, and another thing too, if you’ve got traditions you like, somebody’s got to carry the baton.
[00:32:19.000]
Yes.
[00:32:19.300]
And if it wasn’t for you and Jennifer, I mean, and Jen, I mean, they, they would have died off.
[00:32:24.600]
They would have died off. And I’m like, I will not let that happen.
[00:32:27.800]
You and Jen carry it on.
[00:32:29.600]
You guys make the curry. We do. We do.
[00:32:31.700]
Yeah.
[00:32:32.200]
It’s important to carry those. And they’re our cousins. And so as a family, we, we carry this tradition on. We do the chicken curry meal and we sing the 12 days of Christmas. And let’s be honest, not many in the family are great singers. No, let’s just say that terrible. And what’s also a little bit sad is Papa Schubert always did five golden rings and it was legit.
[00:32:55.100]
Cause he could sing. Oh yeah.
[00:32:57.100]
So one of the kids took that on as the five golden rings. And I think we even played him singing it last year just to remember his voice.
[00:33:06.200]
But we still we sing the 12 days of Christmas every year our kids love it They’re already talking about it this year and we have the chicken curry meal and it’s special. It’s a good time So I’m glad you thought of that. Yeah, so traditions are special Like you said if there’s something special special in your family pass it on to your kids Keep the tradition going kids crave stability and when they have stability security Traditions, they’re going to feel more loved which is going to in turn Make them happier more secure And just they’ll want to pass those things onto their family Yes, that’s more more important than a lot of people give it credit for
[00:33:48.500]
Yeah, so Jesus is the reason for the season teach your kids this make that most important And make some memories make some traditions this season.
[00:33:57.800]
That’s good.
[00:33:58.700]
See you next time.
[00:34:00.100]
Merry Christmas
