Our Top Travel Destinations In Oklahoma

[00:00:20.900]
episode of the y ‘all are crazy ranch podcast we are going to be doing a fun one today we’re going to be talking about top our top travel destinations in Oklahoma there’s some good ones and there’s some ones that maybe you’re not even aware of there’s a lot of hidden gems in the state of Oklahoma well and there’s probably some we’re not aware of so we always love learning new things so let us know if you have places we haven’t been and these are just going to be some of our favorites so

[00:00:50.700]
We are going to give these because we think, hey, there’s lots of fun things to do, cool places to see, and if you’re from here, maybe this will give you some places you haven’t been, and if you aren’t from here, maybe it will give you some reasons that you want to come here and see some of these places.

[00:01:08.000]
Yeah. I think some of the places that we like are definitely outdoorsy.

[00:01:13.500]
I think you will definitely discover that.

[00:01:16.200]
So that’s where we’re going to be coming from, because places we like to go walk around or hike or it’s going to be outside.

[00:01:24.900]
That’s a good point. You will notice that about us. We are not big city people. When we go visit a big city,

[00:01:33.700]
Sometimes we enjoy it and then sometimes we’re like, oh this is just too busy for us Like we definitely do not like crowded dirty Areas and cities right clean fresh air and nature is more of our preference And then also when you have a family when you have kids like it’s hard to go to a crowded place like in a city So we love going places where our kids can run around or we can be outside Yeah, you know, you can’t just take seven kids inside places Just any place so we always have to be aware of that and there are certain places that people want to go that You know, we just can’t sometimes. Yeah, we had a friend one time we had kids

[00:02:16.200]
Maybe two at that time. They did not have kids yet I remember he would invite us to go to like watch those you FC fights at the at Louise or like bars Oh, yeah, and he’s like, well just we’ll just set in the non smoking section Just bring your kids and we’re like, well, it’s like late at night. Yeah, it’s a bar. It’s still smoky It’s like that’s just not conducive to kids, right?

[00:02:39.400]
I think it was like a do you say is Buffalo Wild Wings? I think it’s what Louie’s maybe your Either one like that, you know, and it’s funny because yeah, I’d be like dude It’s no big deal. Just sit in the non -spoking section. You bring your kids and it’s like that’s not a kid environment and now he is they have like three kids and Every once in a while I joke with him like hey, man, let’s go watch a UFC fight Just bring the kids, you know, and he’s like, oh my gosh, you can’t do to do that Now you get it now you get it.

[00:03:09.000]
Yeah, so it changes things

[00:03:11.200]
So these are things like family -friendly destinations that we recommend, we’ve been there, we enjoy them, we know, and so many of these we have been to more than once. So the first one that I had to put on here is Pawhuska.

[00:03:27.600]
Oh gosh, yeah, Pawhuska.

[00:03:31.600]
It’s at the top of my mind because I’m going there today. So I have been going to Pawhuska now for probably the last 10 years. It is the home of the pioneer woman. And if you ever watched her show on Food Network, you’ll know what I’m talking about. She has a store there. What’s really cool is they live there. It is their hometown.

[00:03:54.900]
What I love about this place is they have transformed this small town into a tourist destination.

[00:04:01.900]
Yeah, they really have. It’s pretty neat what they’ve done and the buildings they’ve remodeled. And I think they have a few Oklahoma Grassfed Beef businesses down there, don’t they? Like their main restaurant.

[00:04:11.500]
Yes, they do. Well, ranching is their main Oklahoma Grassfed Beef business, obviously. They own, I think the last I looked, they were like the 17th largest land owner in the United States.

[00:04:20.500]
Right.

[00:04:21.200]
So they own a lot of land. So they do the mercantile, which is a restaurant and store. They also bought the pizza, pizzeria, turned it into a pizza shop. They have an ice cream shop. They have a hotel now.

[00:04:35.500]
It’s crazy.

[00:04:36.200]
They keep adding more.

[00:04:37.800]
Now, you know, it’s definitely more of a woman’s destination.

[00:04:40.900]
Yeah, we’re so now the food is good for the men. Yeah, go there and eat But it’s definitely a woman’s place of just wanting to shop in little stores, and I don’t know what they have for guys I mean, I don’t know I’ve been once but you only know once with me.

[00:04:55.600]
I don’t know gosh I felt like you’d been more than that.

[00:04:58.700]
I’m not sure.

[00:04:59.200]
Yeah, I know the food was excellent You know, yeah, so that’s good me and my friends go each year for my birthday So my birthday was this week. So this is our annual birthday trip We always get an Airbnb there and eat supper and breakfast at the mercantile and we shop on Saturday We just have fun and this year we’re bringing our daughters with us because they’re all teenagers now so it’s gonna be a mother -daughter trip, which will be super fun and so Pahuska there are lots of Great places to eat, but we try to eat at the mercantile pizzeria when we’re there. There’s lots of great shopping and

[00:05:38.500]
Like I said, they’ve made a small town. I mean, literally people from the world come to visit this place.

[00:05:44.800]
Yeah.

[00:05:45.400]
I have met people from Australia, England, all across the country to come here. And it just has that small town charm, you know. When it first opened, you would wait three hours to get a table. Now the last few years I’ve gone, you don’t, there’s no wait list. Now it’s still busy. It’s still vibrant, but we haven’t had to wait for tables, which has been good. But I think this time we have 11 of us going. So hopefully we can get seating in a quick time frame.

[00:06:15.100]
Yeah.

[00:06:16.100]
There’s also some other things to do around there. She has lodge tours out on their ranch. They’re not always, but sometimes those are available. And I think that’s worth the drive out to go see their lodge and where she films the show. You’ve gone to there before.

[00:06:31.000]
Yeah. I feel like you’ve been there two or three times.

[00:06:33.600]
You’re not remembering.

[00:06:34.900]
Oh, I don’t remember some of that kind of stuff.

[00:06:36.900]
So I think I’ve been maybe eight, nine times at this point. So it’s worth the Oklahoma Grassfed Beef trip. It is kind of out there. It is, it’s not like a quick trip from us. It’s about two hours, but it’s definitely a little more remote, but I think you’ll enjoy the town. You will enjoy just the, it feels kind of like a Hallmark movie. It’s like the small town charm.

[00:07:02.000]
And you know what I like? It inspires you to cook more.

[00:07:06.100]
That is true. Well, people tell me I am the pioneer woman of Chandler, Oklahoma. So there is that.

[00:07:13.800]
Yeah, as long as you come back wanting to cook even more and new things, you know, that’s a win.

[00:07:18.100]
I make a lot of pioneer woman recipes.

[00:07:20.400]
Yep, I like it.

[00:07:21.000]
And so a lot of times he’s like, this is good. I’m like, thanks, it’s a pioneer woman recipe. So she has lots of good recipes and lots of cool Oklahoma Grassfed Beef kitchen gadgets. Although.

[00:07:30.300]
My current kitchen is just I came and buy anything else just don’t have much room So we got to wait till we get in the new house before I can get much more Because it’s we are maxed out.

[00:07:41.000]
I don’t know that you need much more.

[00:07:43.100]
Oh, I’m starting over Oh gosh, because the current Oklahoma Grassfed Beef cabin we live in it’s gonna be an Airbnb when we move out And so pretty much leaving most everything there. And so I get to start over Yeah Yeah, yeah, and I’m gonna have a big kitchen with a back kitchen. Yeah, I see your plan No, I got I got lots of room to expand. Oh gosh You get to enjoy the benefits of that. Yeah, it’s true So that was number one on my list because it’s top of mind right now number two

[00:08:14.500]
You will remember this when I say it.

[00:08:17.200]
I don’t know, maybe.

[00:08:18.200]
Natural Falls State Park.

[00:08:19.000]
Oh yeah, I know that one. I mean, we’ve been to that one a bunch.

[00:08:22.400]
Well, tell them where it is.

[00:08:23.600]
I don’t remember.

[00:08:24.000]
It’s like the Arkansas line.

[00:08:27.000]
Yeah. Is it straight east of Oklahoma City, or is it north, too? Do you remember?

[00:08:35.900]
I feel like it’s pretty much straight east and maybe a little north.

[00:08:39.100]
Okay, yeah.

[00:08:40.000]
But Arkansas Oklahoma State Line.

[00:08:42.500]
Yeah.

[00:08:43.400]
It’s, I mean, it’s literally like right before you go into Arkansas, but it’s in Oklahoma.

[00:08:47.100]
And that’s like a hike and trail kind of thing.

[00:08:50.500]
Anytime we’re fairly close, we go there, and it’s cool, because now we have pictures of the kids as they’ve gotten older, and it’s a waterfall. Now in Oklahoma Grassfed Beef, we don’t have a lot of waterfalls.

[00:09:00.500]
No.

[00:09:01.200]
Okay? So.

[00:09:02.700]
So when you find one, you gotta be like, this is cool.

[00:09:04.500]
You gotta go. And they have a good walking path down to it that’s pretty safe.

[00:09:08.600]
with handrails and steps, but you get down there and it’s beautiful. It’s just like a tucked away waterfall.

[00:09:17.200]
And isn’t there like a creek, like river, like you hike along and you can see it at certain spots? Yes. If I remember correctly, yeah.

[00:09:23.800]
And there’s a lot of good hiking through the woods and stuff like that. Yes, and it’s a state park, so they have like picnic tables and you know, things where you can hang out and do things there too, but you gotta go see the waterfall.

[00:09:36.100]
Yeah.

[00:09:36.700]
Take pictures. It’s pretty.

[00:09:38.100]
How do they recommend that one?

[00:09:39.300]
The next one is Broken Bow. No, yeah, that place is crazy now. Broken Bow, we started going to Broken Bow or Hoachatown before it was cool. We started going there like when we first got married, so like 17 years ago. At that time, it was just getting popular. Now it is like a – Tourist trap.

[00:10:02.200]
There you go, it still feels rustic and cool, but it’s busy now. It’s like a mini Branson.

[00:10:09.500]
I heard there’s like a casino down there too, like a big one. We haven’t been down there in several years, but I hear there’s a big casino down there and it’s developed a whole lot.

[00:10:20.000]
Well, I went like two years ago for that retreat I went to and we stayed at this like Baller Airbnb, which there’s a lot of them down there now. It used to just be like that you could rent, but now they have like super nice houses with pools. This one had that hot tubs. I think it slept. Gosh, there were 22 women, I think. So they have huge houses that sleep a lot of people now and they make a lot of money with those houses.

[00:10:49.400]
And so what’s cool about Broken Bow, the hiking, the lake.

[00:10:53.900]
The lake is pretty.

[00:10:54.900]
The trees. Once again, it just feels like you’re in a different place. Huge, tall pine trees. We love, like I said, hiking. We love outdoors, so.

[00:11:08.500]
Yeah, and there’s good fishing in the lake too. There’s good bass fishing. I think there’s good smallmouth bass fishing. There’s even, isn’t it down there that there’s that creek that feeds into it that’s really cold and depending on time of year, they have trout maybe. Not sure if they release, if that’s the place where they release them sometimes.

[00:11:27.500]
That creek is super cold because they rent paddle boats and canoes, kayaks, things like that for you to ride in. But whoa, if you fall in the water, it is cold.

[00:11:36.300]
It’s cold, yeah.

[00:11:37.400]
So that’s fun.

[00:11:38.400]
Beautiful place.

[00:11:38.800]
You’ve probably heard of Broken Bow. If you haven’t gone, you need to go 100%.

[00:11:44.200]
It’s also a good place that like if you have family in Texas that it’s kind of a midway point that you can meet there and we have done that before. So that’s kind of cool too. It’s about four hours from us so it’s not like an easy drive, but it’s not bad and you definitely want to stay like two nights if you go.

[00:12:03.300]
Yeah. It’s not the easiest to get down there, you know, there’s not a highway I don’t think that goes just straight there. You know, you’ve got to kind of do something.

[00:12:13.000]
Saying that when I went to that women’s retreat, I actually went by myself. So I drove by myself and I went away. I had never gone. We’ve always gone straight highway and this one I took the back roads. So I did the Tallahena drive and it was during like right before fall. And so the leaves were starting to change. It was so beautiful. Next time we go, we’re going to do that. It’s a beautiful drive if you take. So I would recommend that route.

[00:12:39.500]
The next one we’re going to talk about is Medicine Park also a tourist destination About Medicine Park.

[00:12:46.700]
So it’s Wichita Mountains on the other side of the state.

[00:12:49.300]
Yep. It’s in Lawton. So it’s in southern, Oklahoma the What is the name Mount Scott is like the mountain there.

[00:12:58.200]
It’s in the Wichita Mountains Very popular if you’re an okie I’m trying to think of the lake that’s right there that I like to fish at the small one There’s the big lake. I feel like it’s La Tonka La Tonka And then there’s the small one next to it That’s by Where the army base sometimes like blows stuff up.

[00:13:17.600]
You’ll be fishing you hear bombs go off Yeah, sport still is down there like right close to it So medicine park is kind of a tucked away little gem of a town There are some great Airbnbs to rent in Medicine Park so you can stay for a couple nights There’s some cute shops and restaurants in Medicine Park. It’s basically like a strip

[00:13:39.500]
of shopping, restaurants, and old homes, but then they have cool new Airbnbs built up in the mountains.

[00:13:46.400]
And they’ve got like a creek or a river running through right by the town, in the town or whatever, yeah.

[00:13:52.000]
Yeah, we need to take the kids down there again soon because we haven’t been in a while, but that’s a good place to hike, but it’s totally different for Broken Bow. Broken Bow, you have the trees and the green. Medicine Park kind of feels like a desert.

[00:14:05.900]
Yeah.

[00:14:06.200]
Can you say that?

[00:14:06.800]
Yeah, it’s got a desert touch to it.

[00:14:08.700]
More Santa Fe feel.

[00:14:11.000]
Something like that.

[00:14:11.800]
Yeah.

[00:14:12.400]
We’ve never gone in like, I don’t think, hiked Mount Scott. We’ve done hiking around somewhere.

[00:14:18.500]
I have as a kid, but not since we have been married. So we need to do that.

[00:14:22.700]
You can do that. And then I think there’s spots you can repel.

[00:14:26.400]
We’re not doing that if we told our kids were repelling we would have a few that would love that and we’re not going down That road yet.

[00:14:33.500]
Yeah, ain’t catching me hanging off a side of a mountain on a rope That ain’t gonna happen.

[00:14:37.600]
That is your worst nightmare. Yeah If I fall this gonna hurt so I ain’t doing that Did you see that funny video I sent to you and your messenger?

[00:14:48.200]
It was this mom.

[00:14:50.100]
I did that I don’t know You want to check it no Technical difficulties the cameras made a noise Okay So the bit the video was this mom who went with their kids to the trampoline park And she tried to get on one of those swinging things that goes into the foam pit and she Being a mom and going to the trampoline with your kids in the in your 30s is so fun You meet so many new people. She said today. I met a paramedic three nurses a doctor and I almost met Jesus And it’s her trying to swing on this things, and you know

[00:15:25.700]
arms are not ready for it as an adult. Cause you’re not like constantly hanging from things. And she just face plants into this foam pit. And then it looks like her husband has to drag her out of it.

[00:15:38.200]
Yeah, she could hardly get out of it.

[00:15:39.700]
She couldn’t even get out of the pit. So just saying like when you’re an adult, things hit differently than when you’re a kid.

[00:15:48.500]
Most of us are a lot heavier than we used to be. And we don’t do monkey bars anymore. You know, stuff like that, you know, hardcore athletic stuff. And so you haven’t supported your own body weight and you don’t even realize it, you know. And so you go and just try to hang from something while it’s moving and you don’t.

[00:16:07.200]
you know, she couldn’t hold on. She just went straight down.

[00:16:10.600]
It was so funny. I was like, I can relate to that. I tried to do a cartwheel a few years ago. That doesn’t work anymore. I used to do cartwheels so easily. You know, all the time, cartwheels, roundoffs, I could, it did not work. My arms just collapsed.

[00:16:26.600]
Yeah, no that ain’t happening no more.

[00:16:28.200]
No, but I have been doing pushups every day for like, what, six months at least now. So I’m really proud of myself.

[00:16:37.200]
Yeah, it’s been good for you.

[00:16:38.300]
Yeah, it’s been good for my strength. Okay, the next one, we did Medicine Park. Check that off. The next one is the Arbuckle Mountains, Turner Falls, Sulphur area, Davis. That’s a really good place. We’re actually going there for spring break for a couple of days.

[00:16:54.400]
Really?

[00:16:54.700]
I don’t know if I told you yet, but I did put it on your calendar. So we’re going for like a Sunday through Tuesday.

[00:17:00.300]
Really?

[00:17:00.800]
So like two nights.

[00:17:01.900]
By ourselves?

[00:17:02.800]
Yes.

[00:17:03.500]
Okay, just us and the kids just a little spring break getaway. I have the desire to go hiking And we have not done that in a while.

[00:17:13.000]
Hmm Sounds good.

[00:17:14.900]
I love hiking. So what’s cool about this area?

[00:17:19.900]
Again, it’s there’s a Arbuckle Lake and then around the lake. There’s just a lot of trees, you know That lake’s pretty it’s pretty and when you live in like central Oklahoma like Oklahoma City and stuff like that And then you go Oklahoma City to the west, you know, a lot of the landscape is very flat And there might be some trees but they’re not like they’re not like thick or nothing like that And so when you go to outside of Oklahoma City like southeast or to the east of I -35 and places like that you get into the more of the hills and the trees and different landscape pretty landscape and so

[00:17:53.800]
around the Arbuckle Lake area, that’s kind of what that’s like.

[00:17:57.500]
Arbuckle Lake.

[00:17:58.600]
Yeah.

[00:17:59.000]
Yes, so you’ll hear that called Arbuckle Lake, the Arbuckles, Arbuckle Wilderness is there.

[00:18:04.900]
We got some little mountains down there.

[00:18:06.300]
Yeah, I have memories as a kid. Did you go to Arbuckle Wilderness as a kid?

[00:18:10.300]
I don’t think so.

[00:18:11.200]
Okay, so what it is, we’ve never taken the kids, we may take them. You drive through, and you feed the animals out your window. So they give you like feed cups, and you feed, all I remember is ostriches, because I’ve never liked birds, I’ve always been afraid of them, and I remember holding this cup of food, I guess it terrified me, and this ostrich head comes in, and it’s just eating this food, and I remember saying, that’s enough, that’s enough, and this ostrich head is just eating this food out of this cup I’m holding, and I keep trying to pull it back in. So that was terrifying. So as you can imagine.

[00:18:50.100]
The ostrich ain’t gonna quit.

[00:18:51.300]
No. Why did God make those birds?

[00:18:53.800]
understand they seem very useless to me yeah I don’t know what their purpose is I’m not sure I’m gonna add another one because I just thought about it I’m not sure you don’t want to get an ostrich for the ranch oh that’s like my might get you one next year for your birthday I’ve never seen someone have an ostrich I’ve seen them have emus you can take pictures of it on the front porch next to your porch goose I don’t want a live ostrich no thank you no thank you so another cool thing down there is what’s called Turner Falls and that’s a little waterfall but it’s actually really pretty yeah it’s pretty wide it’s a wide waterfall I grew up going to church camp in Turner Falls so it’s a very pretty area good memories down there there’s also a chocolate factory down there yeah what is the name of that chocolate factory

[00:19:46.400]
I don’t remember.

[00:19:47.800]
There’s a good chocolate factory right off the interstate that you can tour. Yeah.

[00:19:55.900]
What else?

[00:19:56.700]
The next one is Monkey Island, Shangri -La, Grand Lake.

[00:20:02.000]
Oh, Shangri -La.

[00:20:03.100]
So we’re giving you guys lots of names for all of these things, but it’s because they’re called different things and there’s different areas. So I guess the main name for this place would be Grand Lake.

[00:20:17.400]
Yeah, Grand Lake.

[00:20:18.700]
So that is about two and a half hours from us and it is straight east, yes?

[00:20:25.800]
Northeast.

[00:20:26.600]
So it’s Northeast. This is my favorite lake in Oklahoma.

[00:20:31.100]
I think it is the most beautiful. When we go, a lot of times we do rent a boat and go out in tube and just drive around and it is so beautiful and there’s beautiful lake houses on it. So you can just drive around and look at the houses and I love it down there.

[00:20:47.600]
Yeah, and we like to stay at the resort on the lake called Shangri -La. It’s a hotel, they got a really nice pool. Really nice big pool. Yeah, cool kind of kids play area, a restaurant or two. They got pickleball courts, they got an arcade. What else they got? Basketball, oh they got the wiffle ball, baseball. We love doing the wiffle ball field. People always laugh at us because with our large family we can just play by ourselves.

[00:21:16.000]
We can have a whole team play a whole game.

[00:21:17.600]
We don’t need anybody else to play with us. We can just go out there and play and you can have offense and defense and.

[00:21:25.500]
It’s it’s kind of fun.

[00:21:26.700]
It’s really fun. We love going staying at shangri -la and there’s like three restaurants What’s cool about going there is you never have to leave the resort once you get there if you don’t want to You can just stay on the resort Eat hang out swim play rent a boat.

[00:21:40.800]
There’s also a super nice golf course there You’ve just never gotten to play it We always have the kids with us and so you never gotten to play my buddy I was like, oh did you play golf while you were there and I was like bro I got seven kids and can’t play golf You know one day when I get some of my you know, boys older like we’ll go play but You know, I can’t just go play and for four hours and leave you with all the kids on a trip And it’s like that’s not it just doesn’t work. It’s not the move man.

[00:22:06.100]
It’s not the move That’s why you’re a good husband.

[00:22:08.100]
Yeah, but of course looks nice

[00:22:09.700]
That’s super nice. This is also called Monkey Island. So when you’re there, like you, that’s just the name of it there. So once again, beautiful area, highly recommend. The next place that I have, which this isn’t really like a vacation destination, but I do think it’s a cool place to take your kids. And it is called Lost Creek Safari in Stillwater. You’ve never been there with me. Me and the kids usually go once or twice a summer. However, it did burn, several of the barns burned down in a wildfire like a year ago. So it was closed last summer. What I, the ostrich reminded me of this, okay? So they have, they have cool animals, but it’s like a miniature zoo.

[00:22:52.700]
So, you can walk through and you get to see lemurs, those ring -tailed raccoon cat things. The kids love those. Lots of monkeys. I can literally watch monkeys play all day long. I send you monkey videos sometimes.

[00:23:11.500]
Yeah, you do. And they are funny.

[00:23:12.600]
Well, my favorite is when they have babies. And you watch the monkey take care of the baby and do the same things that a woman does. You know, and it’s just, I just love it. And they like ride on their back. So that’s a cool place to take your kids if you’re looking for a day trip. Yeah, I recommend Lost Creek Safari. So those are what’s on my list as far as the main destinations I wanted to recommend. Are there other places you can think of that you think people should go?

[00:23:42.200]
mean one place I like to go is McGee Creek Lake it’s in like a down by Atoka Oklahoma and me and my grandpa and my cousin go there I don’t know that we go every year you know it gets tough to do but every so often we’ll go down there and bass fish in the lake and that area is really really cool you can camp down there and there’s a bunch of pine trees and you know it’s very rocky and the lake is really cool there’s big you know rock cliff like bluffs and you know it’ll just go like a hundred feet of water you know in certain areas and

[00:24:23.000]
It’s a great bass fishing place and just it’s just really cool place to go I enjoy going down there and it’s before you get to Broken Bow if you’re coming from, you know the West Yeah, another really cool place.

[00:24:35.700]
I think is called Salyers Lake and that’s down where I grew up and it’s a pretty place to go hang out at a pond with a waterslide and They do church camps and they do weddings and events down there. So that is really pretty.

[00:24:49.600]
I didn’t think about Striper fishing at Lake Texoma.

[00:24:53.600]
That’s a lot.

[00:24:54.500]
There’s a lot of guides on Lake Texoma that do striper fishing So that’s an easy thing to go do you know, you can find somebody to take you striper fishing on on the lake and

[00:25:05.200]
There’s a lot of fish to catch. It’s a lot of fun. It’s a great time it’s a good activity to do with you with your kids and It’s usually action -packed. You’re usually catching a lot of fish and which is which is fun And so that’s a cool place too.

[00:25:20.900]

[00:26:02.600]

[00:26:04.900]
