Building A Business That Lasts Part 2

[00:00:23.600]
of the y ‘all are crazy ranch podcast today we are going to be talking about part two of building a Oklahoma Grassfed Beef business that lasts yeah there’s a lot to build in a business at last so our first episode was starting to get a little long we’re like we got to do a part two we gotta do part two and there could be a part three and four but we’re gonna sum it up in part two so we’re going over a workbook that I wrote a few years ago called building a business

[00:00:52.800]
And we’re going off the Bible verse of Isaiah 41 10. Do not fear for I am with you. Do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. So last time we talked a lot about your ideal self, creating the life that you want, writing down your goals for one year, three year and dream big goals. And we talked about doing a personal mission statement and creating an ideal client avatar for who you want to work with.

[00:01:31.500]
And then just some ways that you can conquer your days practically. I have found that when I teach people love practical tips. Well, so when I can leave women with like, here’s some things you can go home and like.

[00:01:45.500]
and make happen today, it’s always a winner. So if you have not yet, go back and listen to part one for building a business that lasts. This is part two. You ready? Okay, I think this is gonna be a great way to kick off the last one. We talked a lot about building your business, right? Working really hard. Working more than 40 hours a week. Working on your vacations, like just building, right? So this time, I think it’ll be great to talk about how can you build not just a business you want, but build a life you want.

[00:02:28.800]
That’s the hard part. Because it’s easy to get going just one direction and that’s all you focus on. We all know plenty of successful people that, man, they made it in their Oklahoma Grassfed Beef business or their career, but they lost their family.

[00:02:45.900]
So many times.

[00:02:47.500]
They lost relationships. They lost their marriage and they got a divorce. It’s easy to go all in one direction, but building and winning on all fronts of your life, that’s the ultimate goal.

[00:03:05.500]
And once again, we don’t reach from this because we have it figured out because we’re 38 years old.

[00:03:11.200]
almost 39 we are still learning with you guys so we are speaking from experience yes but also from the perspective of a 39 year old married couple well and it’s it’s a never -ending fight and battle and you know it’s uh you’ll you’ll go through and then all of a sudden you’ll be like oh I’m going to one track that way you know and you’ll mess up you know I do that all the time me and you talk about that sometimes too about how like you can tell like my mind is always like thinking on a Oklahoma Grassfed Beef business of something you know even at home and stuff like that and I have to work on that because yeah I’m problem -solving and stuff’s going on and it’s hard for me to shut that off you know we are a couple very unique in that we are both entrepreneurs both business owners obviously we’re raising a family together and we’re both firstborn

[00:04:09.500]
leadership personalities. So I think we’re unique in that. We have a lot of friends who, you know, the husband maybe works full time and the wife stays home and like does more of like traditional trad wife duties.

[00:04:25.200]
Well, that’s, I didn’t even know. What’d you tell her about a trad wife? Like last year I learned that that was an actual term.

[00:04:31.100]
Yeah. I tell him like I’m but I like to make money. Yeah. So that’s kind of, that’s me. I’m half and half.

[00:04:39.000]
Okay. Trad wife.

[00:04:40.900]
You know, but we have a lot of friends like that. Well, that’s, that is a very different dynamic. And then we are in a unique dynamic and we get that.

[00:04:51.100]
So we can call each other out on things in a nice way Sometimes I’m like babe, like I feel like what I’ve been talking to you lately.

[00:04:59.600]
You’re not really like listening You’re not always nice to me I’m just kidding. You’re nice thing. So but we’ve learned to do that in kind ways I think so well and I can you know speak to the other fathers that are kind of like Maybe my personality or you know, you’re you’re a hunter -gatherer I heard Dave Ramsey say yesterday on this podcast like as a as a man you got a wooden as a Oklahoma Grassfed Beef business owner He said every day you got to leave the cave and go kill something drag it back home He said then the next morning you gotta leave the cave go kill something drag it back home He said you don’t feel good. Who cares? You gotta leave the cave go kill something drag it back home and we can get into that mindset and

[00:05:48.400]
then just realize days go by or whatever weeks go by and we’re not mentally present with our wife or our kids because we’re just so focused on providing and all that kind of stuff. That’s an easy trap to fall into. I fall into it all the time. So it’s a never -ending battle.

[00:06:07.800]
Yeah and I think it is a challenge for moms and dads when you are going, when you go to work and then you come home and it’s too, oh it’s sometimes hard to transition I think is the right word to say of like okay now I’m home and I need to just put work aside and focus on where I am. Like where am I right now? Focus on that.

[00:06:29.100]
Yeah, yeah it’s good.

[00:06:30.500]
So that can be a challenge but one that you can be aware of and get better at.

[00:06:34.300]
So we’re going to talk about a little bit about what do you love to do when you’re not working?

[00:06:39.500]
This is something that I’ve had to work on a lot over the years because I am an Enneagram three and I love achieving and You know, I’m very goal and oriented and you are too But it’s it’s one reason that has allowed me to become Successful and to do things well because I can get gung -ho But what’s been harder for me is like, well, what do you actually like to do for fun? Like what are your hobbies? Brian Baffini always says like if you’re not taking a few vacations with your family each year and you’re just working all the time

[00:07:18.400]
Oh, that’s a trap.

[00:07:20.500]
Yeah, it is a trap. But sometimes too, at least for me, like I really enjoy working, like I enjoy it. And so, but it is important to have some other hobbies and to like let your brain rest and mentally shut it off and stuff like that. But it is a, it can be hard sometimes to go do that. You have to remember, hey, I need to probably check out here for a little bit.

[00:07:44.100]
Yeah, I mean, and there’s, there has to be a balance in life. My busiest year of real estate so far was in 2020, which I’m sure was the case for many people, 2021, those two years. And I was selling 45 houses a year.

[00:08:00.100]
on my own, without anything from my team, that’s a lot. It’s a lot. And I felt very busy and I felt like, wow, that was a lot. But then I see other people who, they may, not very many sell more than that, let’s be real. I think the average sells like three a year. Okay, but I will see some occasionally who are like, I sold 90 houses this year.

[00:08:29.400]
And it’s like, oh my gosh, I was so stinking busy with 45. How do you sell 90? What in the world? And like, you have kids and that’s a comparison game because my life’s not their life.

[00:08:42.600]
But you’ll also see on the flip side of that, that, oh, they talked about a few months ago how they’ve had a lot of health problems.

[00:08:50.600]
Yeah.

[00:08:51.200]
And, you know, like, oh, gosh, they haven’t taken a vacation in five years. And you just have to be careful with comparison and you have to focus on not just like making money and sales and you have to focus on creating a good life.

[00:09:06.100]
Yeah, man, once you really grasp that. It’s so important because building a business can it can become addicting. There’s always another level. There’s always another something, you know, and then sometimes you got to stop and just ask yourself, well, what in the world am I doing this for? If you never even ask yourself that question, then, you know, there’s no end game. There’s no real goal. You might have a goal of like growing a company or something. But what for, you know, are you?

[00:09:35.100]
You know, what are you trying to build for your family or what are you? What are you doing?

[00:09:38.900]
you know other than just building something what’s the purpose of it and man having a holistic life of Taking your kids on vacations and spending time with them while you’re growing a cut you can do both And it’s it’s important to be have a healthy balance in that area I think sometimes I have to remind myself of gosh like yeah I’m building this business and working this Oklahoma Grassfed Beef business But I also have seven kids at home and they all do activities and we’re at their activities most evenings most Saturdays and so like that That takes time away from like oh you could be making more money absolutely, but you also have to think about the season you’re in and Not living with regrets later on right

[00:10:30.200]
Yeah, I’d rather be there for all my kids stuff than now. You know, we have to do both as business owner You got to build a successful company and do this But it’s like I’m not gonna sacrifice missing my kids stuff, you know to go make a little extra more Now if we were in a season where the business was failing and I had to kind of do that for a certain period That’s different You know, so just be clear there, you know when you start one there’s gonna be some sacrifice But you can’t stay there forever Or else your family doesn’t know you yeah, and that is not the goal.

[00:11:01.900]
It’s not the goal So some of these questions are what do you love to do when you’re not working? You can list out a few of those things. How can you make time to do them more? What will you gain by living life more intentionally? How would you ideally like to start?

[00:11:16.600]
each day, and how would you ideally like to end each day? You can write out your non -negotiables. For us, it’s church on Sundays, Bible reading each morning, dinner around the dinner table each evening. Those are three non -negotiables. You know, we do go to church every single Sunday. We do read our Bible each morning, like for the most part, and we do have dinner around the table most evenings. I’m not saying that is 100 % of the time, because like last night, you were at wrestling practice with the boys.

[00:11:50.800]
I was, I came home a little bit earlier with Brylee and the littles, so we had dinner when we got home, and then you guys had dinner when you got home. But.

[00:11:59.900]
it was around the table.

[00:12:01.300]
You came home with uh number one and number six and number seven.

[00:12:05.900]
Yeah that’s right just numbers.

[00:12:07.600]
Number one six seven.

[00:12:09.000]
But you know what that’s uh that’s what you have to do sometimes. Yeah. So it’s not always gonna look perfect but it’s like most of the time this is what we do. Yeah. This is our goal every time and if we hit the target most of the time that’s a win.

[00:12:23.800]
Yeah you’re never gonna hit it all the time.

[00:12:25.800]
Writing out a mission statement. Having like a family bible verse is really important. Words and phrases to show your dreams for your family. Goals for your family’s future. And prayers for your children. These are all segments in this workbook that I think are things to think through.

[00:12:47.400]
Sometimes I think when we talk about these things, it may feel like, oh my gosh, this is very overwhelming. Once again, we’re not saying you have to do it perfectly, but just writing these things down, you’re gonna be amazed at what a difference it makes.

[00:13:01.200]
Yeah, and once you start writing stuff like this down, then you’re gonna write other things down. And when you’re building a business, you’ve gotta have stuff written out. You gotta have like standard operating procedures, checklists, you know, done every time. You know, we’ve got checklists. You write a new auto policy, what are you supposed to do? And there’s a checklist. You write a new home policy. What are you supposed to do? There’s a checklist.

[00:13:27.500]
You have a new customer appointment, somebody that just became a customer of our agency. What are we going to go over in that appointment? Well, I’ve got a checklist and a script of questions to ask and the conversation outlined. When we have an annual review with a customer, what does that look like? You’ve got to write all that stuff out. That way you can build the business and hire people and delegate that stuff off. And then our Airbnbs, we’ve got a cleaning checklist of the expectations and things that need to get done. All that ties into even stuff like this, but this is kind of where it starts. You’re writing out, what is my successful business going to look like? How much do I need to earn? How many things do I have to sell? What do I want my work -life balance, as they call it, to look like? It’s a teeter -tauter a lot of times.

[00:14:21.700]
You know, it takes a lot of intentional thinking and planning to build a business that lasts and it never ends because you’re always going to have to be making adjustments and we made some pretty big adjustments in my agencies just this week, moving some people around, different positions. But that’s that’s stuff that me and my manager had to think through of what our Oklahoma Grassfed Beef business needed needs at the moment and seeing an area of improvement and then making some switches. And it’s just stuff that you’ve got to do that. It’s like it’s like you’re playing a big chess match that you’re always move, you know, moving pieces.

[00:15:00.100]
Well, in so much of our podcasts, we talk about living intentionally living an intentional life.

[00:15:05.500]
And so this goes back into that and so talking about doing some things that you enjoy Just doing because it’s good for you, or you want to have some areas that you like to have fun And not just work all the time.

[00:15:21.400]
I think that’s really important. I think for us. We have both discovered like We enjoy traveling we get to travel a lot with your business Which is such a blessing, so it’s kind of forced us to travel and now we’re creating that lifestyle of traveling with our kids and giving them experiences So that’s been a fun thing for us and gives us things to look forward to I’ve been enjoying walking and making goals to do 10 K’s and half marathons And that gives me a goal gives me something to look forward to and it also Encourages me to walk each day so I can prepare for these things

[00:16:01.200]
You enjoy your running guns that you do twice a year.

[00:16:04.500]
Yeah, you know when you said that travel a lot with my Company it kind of reminded me of when I first started it. You said you remember what you told me about traveling You said you will always earn the trips Yeah in my Oklahoma Grassfed Beef Business you hit certain benchmarks, you know, you you earn some trips and stuff and I just remember you saying we will always Go never not hit travel. Yes, ma ‘am Oh, yeah, and I was gonna do it anyway, it was just it was funny, you know Cuz you’re like you will always they say hit that behind every successful man

[00:16:48.100]
successful woman.

[00:16:50.000]
Yes it’s a hundred percent true and if you pick the wrong one you’re in trouble. I joke about that too with some other agents or other business people too.

[00:17:05.300]
I’m like well you know if your wife just gave you an ultimatum I mean you’d probably be doing a lot better you know so you’re don’t yeah no like you can do this and you should do this and your family’s depending on you to do this yeah so I ain’t gonna let them down now because gosh we’ve been our kids will never know a life of a not us not doing this so it’s like dad where are we going next year yeah okay and so it’s already like okay you you have to hit this goal because we already know we know a year in advance where the trip is next year so we can already we’ve been planning to go on to the Bahamas this year

[00:17:44.700]
Since last year.

[00:17:46.200]
Yeah, now the kids are like, yeah Well, we already know what next year is so I think it encourages you it does and it’s a good healthy thing Do you think I want to come home and say sorry kids we didn’t make it No, don’t do that so Those are good healthy motivations and you can find some healthy motivations for you, too Because sharing your goals with your family like that becomes a healthy motivation and they’re gonna remind you and you don’t want to let Them down.

[00:18:12.700]
Yeah honest about your goals and I Like to say when you show your kids you can do hard things. It shows them that they can do hard things, too Just like you know training for the half marathon. It’s like, you know the last time me and Briley did this in the fall It was cold. It was windy. I bought us heated vests and

[00:18:37.900]
you know, we had to bundle up to go do it. It would have been a lot easier to be like, it’s gonna be 30 degrees. We’re not gonna do this. But instead I’m like, you know what, sis? We can do hard things. And when I showed her like, hey, mom can do hard things and that means you can too. And then you accomplish it and you’re proud of yourself.

[00:18:57.800]
Yeah, yeah, and that’s good. And finding things that allow you to have some fun, whether it’s golf or fishing or hunting or shooting guns or whatever, like that stuff is important because when you do those activities, it does help take your mind off of business for a while. You know, and that stuff is healthy.

[00:19:20.900]
And that’s why I like reading fiction a lot is because it does, it’s not like I have to be highlighting and thinking. It can just be kind of like a, you just, you’d get lost in a.

[00:19:30.900]
Sometimes that’s good for my mind, because my mind is, it’s not always thinking strategically like yours, but it is always thinking and planning, you know this, always. And so that’s good for me, and that can be a great hobby.

[00:19:47.600]
And I tried the non -fiction thing, it just, I couldn’t do it.

[00:19:50.200]
Well, you tried to read The Hobbit, which is, I knew that wasn’t going to work.

[00:19:54.300]
I just couldn’t do it, it’s like, what am I reading, you know? Like, if I’m reading, I better be learning something, you know, and so I just…

[00:20:03.800]
It won’t work.

[00:20:05.100]
But for me, I’m going to go out and shoot guns and stuff like that, and that…

[00:20:08.300]
And run a chainsaw.

[00:20:09.500]
Yeah, like this afternoon, I’m going to go run a chainsaw for an hour, and I’m going to go shoot some guns for a little bit, and that’ll be fun.

[00:20:15.700]
Yeah, you enjoy that.

[00:20:17.200]
Yeah, I’m going to be good.

[00:20:18.600]
Yeah, so you have to find what works for you, what you enjoy, but you have to have those things. I think so many times as a mom and probably as a dad…

[00:20:28.500]
your life becomes serving your family and you can be like gosh who am I I’m not who I used to be I am different but I still am still me and so it’s so important to find and maybe even reclaim what you had and maybe it looks different like I was an athlete my whole life but I can’t go play basketball or softball at the level I did when I was 18 my body is free like it doesn’t work the same who would I who would I play against but I can use my body like we’ve really enjoyed playing pickleball that’s been fun for us to do as a family and it allows you to still feel athletic yeah and so like things like that that I think it’s important you can’t just let yourself completely go you have to like you have to pursue things that you enjoy that aren’t just totally work -related

[00:21:22.600]
Yeah, for sure and I would say one thing that just came to my mind is like if you are fortunate enough to build a business And it’s working and it’s becoming successful a lot of mistakes happen after that year two or three and The business owner starts to take their eye off the ball Because they work so hard to get it going and it’s finally going they’re like praise God like I can be done I don’t want to do this anymore and they kind of like check out you know what I’m saying and I would just caution you to never do that because That’s when disasters are gonna strike, but it’s a it’s kind of a natural tendency for a lot of folks to do But then all of a sudden you take your eye off that ball and your business starts slipping Employees stop executing the game plan because they’re not being held accountable You stop paying attention and don’t realize these problems are occurring And you do that for for too long

[00:22:22.200]
you got to start over back at square one or you go out either way so I would just tell you that you have the business is just it’s a long marathon of a thing it’s never over and it’s something you always have to be working on and adjusting and but it can be dangerous for people that get it going for a few years and then they just check out and they’re never at the office there then the team starts getting a little bit resentful of you and they lack leadership they don’t put leadership in place management and stuff and they just start letting stuff slip and don’t fall into that trap well as is life as you said like business yeah it never stops well neither does life no until we go to heaven so you know I think we can always be growing improving you know and just I think I hope as you look back at your life you can think

[00:23:16.400]
I mean, I’m so I’m such in a better. I’m in such a better place now because I’ve learned these things I’ve grown and I can look back and see where I’ve been and I can see God’s hand Carrying me and guiding me and that’s the goal of all this like we want you to make changes now So when you get five ten years down the road, you can be like, oh my gosh I’m so glad I did that and it’s never too late We saw a lady at church last week get baptized at the age of 90. Yeah, that was cool Man talking about making you cry a 90 year old woman and she was eager. She’s like, I’m ready to get baptized Yeah, she so it’s like it’s never too late until God calls you home It is not too late to make changes make things better make Improvements and just create the life that you want and you can be proud of and you know that God

[00:24:06.400]
ultimately wants you to have.

[00:24:09.500]
Yeah, that’s good.

[00:24:10.900]
So I’m gonna read this prayer as we end out today. This is from number 624 through 26. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord turn his face towards you and give you peace.

[00:24:28.000]
That’s good. Until next time.
