In a world full of preservatives and unwanted food additives, we want to bring back pure, healthy, nutritious food the way God intended it to be!
Our food supply in the United States has gotten over commercialized, centralized, and almost monopolized. Not only are we losing control of our food supply by having only a handful of major corporations in control, the way animals are being raised and fed is not natural. Cattle are being raised in feedlots and being pumped full of drugs and grain and chickens are being raised on concrete floors in tiny cages. We believe animals need to be raised and fed out on the land they were made to be on and not raised and fed in captivity. We believe raising animals in nature on natural grasses leads to healthier soils which leads to healthier plants which leads to a healthier animal which leads to a more nutritious food for our customers.
So what makes the Y’all Are Crazy Ranch different? Well, it starts with our philosophy. Our philosophy is that if we work with nature the way God intended, nature will work with us. We believe in “Regenerative Ranching”. To us, regenerative ranching is a holistic approach where we’re managing the whole ecosystem on our ranch. In other words, we’re not just raising cattle and only looking after their wellbeing. Our goal is to heal the land, build soil, add diversity to plants in our pastures, restore wildlife abundance, and raise healthy livestock. Prioritizing soil health will create healthy and diverse plants. The healthy and diverse plants will feed the animals.
The animals will fertilize and feed the soil. And around and around we go!
Our belief is that synthetic chemicals such as fertilizers and weed sprays are harmful to the soil and kill so many microbes and helpful insects. By killing the microbes and helpful insects, a farm will become dependent on the synthetic chemicals forever because mother nature won’t be able to do its job. This is not only bad for the land and animals but it drives up cost for the rancher who eventually goes out of business because the cost to use such chemicals continues to get more and more expensive.
On the Y’all Are Crazy Ranch there are no synthetic chemicals being used in our pastures.
We are using the animals to manage the pastures for us. On our ranch we have cattle, sheep, and goats. By having diversity in our livestock, they’re able to work as a team in managing and taking care of the pastures. For example, instead of spraying our pastures with harmful weed sprays we let the sheep and goats eat the weeds! Not only do they love to eat weeds but as they eat them, they’re walking around fertilizing the land! It’s a true win-win. Also, the cattle, sheep, and goats, help protect each other from harmful parasites. A sheep or goat can ingest a parasite that would be harmful for a cow and experience no harm. And a cow can ingest a parasite that’s harmful for a sheep or goat and experience no harm. This is another way we work with nature and not against it.
At the moment our ranch consists of 570 contiguous acres located in Chandler, Ok. We have purchased land that was overrun by cedar trees and neglected for decades. Cedar trees in Oklahoma have been responsible for fueling major fires resulting in lost lives and properties so we’re also helping to lower the risk of these outbreaks. The soils and native grasses were really struggling due to the cedar trees consuming all the moisture in the ground. We have cleared over 100 acres of cedar trees and counting! Where we have cleared, we’ve planted oats, rye grass, peas, and fescue. This will help the land start healing and once the plants are established we will start grazing our animals on it which will bring the land back to life! We have at least 100 more acres to clear and plan on getting that done within the next couple years.
Another special thing about our ranch is that someone on our team is working with our animals on a daily basis and checking on their wellbeing.
Our regenerative ranching models require the animals to be moved to fresh grass on a daily basis so a member of our team is walking the land and amongst the animals multiple times per day.
epending on the season they might need to be moved up to three or four times per day. We manage where the animals graze by using hot wire fences and fencing off certain areas we want them to graze at a given time. This methodology mimics the way animals grazed years ago before there were fences keeping them on a certain piece of land. Years ago, cattle would graze an area and then move on to another area constantly in search of fresh grass to eat. Also, wild predators would be in constant pursuit which also drove the animals to continue moving. Since we only give the animals a portion of the pasture to graze at a time we are able to give them fresh grass often and let the grass they just grazed heal and recover. When the grass has time to heal and recover, it will grow back more robust and healthy than when the animals were there last!
Conventional ranching usually has a big pasture fenced off and the animals just have free rein of the entire pasture eating where they please and the owner of the cattle checks on them very rarely.
Or if they check on them they basically drive by to make sure they’re still there. This might not sound like a bad idea but this leads to poor pasture health. Animals that are not actively managed will eat the same areas of grass that they like until they eat the plant down to the dirt. What’s worse is they won’t eat the plants they don’t like so those plants will thrive and choke out the good stuff! This leads to the rancher wanting to spray chemicals to get rid of the undesirable plants and perpetuates the vicious cycle.
